Default Do i need battery cables

MY truck was working just fine until i shut it off. Then i went to turn it back on and it just made 1 click i tried it several more times just a click then i saw the positive cables smoking. So i clean the termals and on the starter cilonoid on the fender. I have got to the starter yet but it still just clicked and smokes. Lately the starter has been staying engaged but if i shut the truck off and turn it back on it will stop or if i disconnect the cable it will stop. It doesnt do it all the time just once in a while. So im not sure if thats got anything to do with why it wont start now but im hoping i dont need cables since there a pita to change.

Cables can be a pita if you don't have tools.

Smoking cables usually mean high resistance to ground. Basically a bad cable. The starter run on is likely a bad solenoid. It probably fused itself when the cables heated up. You may have some starter damage as well. Find the high resistance then make sure to test everything else. If one thing fails in the starting charging system it puts strain on all the other parts.

Im pretty sure the bolt where it goes to the ground cable on the frame is bad after looking. It would be an easy changout if the bolt wasnt so rusted i could fit s a socket on to it. So idk what i can do for that

I deleted that frame to block ground and just ran another cable.

That's what im telling you.. That frame hookup is unnecessary if you run another cable from block to ground somewhere else.

I ran one from the battery negative to the bellhousing starter mount bolt and another from the other side of the bellhousing to the frame rail. I cleaned the paint off the frame rail ground point to ensure a good bond.
