On rears? If so, there is a white paste for the ring gear, paint it on, see where the toe pattern is, adjust using crush collar or if there is a setting in an 8.8, use it, I am used to 9" rears, as far as if it is valves, there is none for hydraulics, you can buy a dial indicator online, or at Grainger or McMaster Carr. If you do, spend a little xtra for a Starrett.

buy the indicator, it will make it so much easier to set the gears. the gear paint is to see gear mesh, not backlash. heres some links to a cheap version of what youll need from MSC industrial supply, no need for an expensive starret for what youre using it for

get the tools to do it right man, its worth it in the long run when youre not taking the gear set out again because it was set wrong

Yeah thats what I say.. Ive never rebuilt a rearend so I didnt know anything about the paint stuff. Since its a 9" I might just take the chunk to the diff shop and have them check it. Im doing it tomorrow so I dont have time to wait for tools to get here.. I need my truck back so my wife can have her car back
