I might try the rebuild, don't know what my rear gear is, and if I find a regular cab long bed 2wd 250, will that drive shaft work?? would it be easier to modify that drive shaft than mine?? what should I expect to spend on a good used ZF? and if I do use my drive shaft, I am not very good at measuring, will the shop do it for me?? or tell me how? thanks again for all your help in advance, also I have dual tanks and my gas gauges stopped working until a quarter tank, do I need new sending units since it reads from a quarter down?? or a bad connection?

Yes, I would say that a drive shaft out of the same body style truck that has a ZF tranny will work. I had my original drive shaft changed. Drive line shops have all the material to modify OR make you a complete new drive shaft OR modify any shaft you bring in to them. They can help you and show you how to measure.

Funny, my rear tank gas gauge doesn't work either, but I haven't tried to tackle that one yet.

I don't know what you might expect to pay for a ZF tranny. Mine was sitting in a garage on the floor for 20 years. It cost $300 then.
