The other day when i was switching my heater to the panel instead of defrost i though great my friggin cable broke. Thats gonna be a PITA to fix. In a 87 btw. So today over a week later i pull it apart and nope cable is find just the stupid plastic tab lock broke so i go to my 88 parts truckand pull that one and of course there different. now i got to get a cable from a 87 and take it sll apart again. Now i have to change the settings on the floor by hand. I have to reach up and move the little lever around. Another thing putting the cable back in right is going to be hard too.

I had so many problems with the 80s ford heater cables, i just folded the end of the cable over on full heat defrost, and just turned the fan on and off , if it got too hot open the vent window.

The cable is for hot/cold, not vent selection.

Couldn't remember, had the vent selection problem in the toyota, the price of driving crusher bait. The slide control for vents has an off position, I bent the cable so it was on hot all the time, jumpered the fan speed to high, and used the off position on the selector to kill the heater, Wow I am a hack. The toyota would break somthing if you moved the controls with the blower on, eventually i just set it, and un hooked the cables, until i sold that one.

No, there's not. Mine is an '87 too. You'll have to post a pic if you want me to even consider believing you. The vent selection is vacuum. That isn't the one in my '87 either, mine has the compressor button.
