Default Cranks, No Start

Greetings,

Just looking for ideas. 1996 F-150 4.9L A/T 2WD, cranks but wont start and the fuel gage is pinned over the full mark. All fuses are good and the tank has at least 5 gals. of gas in it. I'm sure this is not the first time this has come up. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hard to tell without more info. Suggest to verify the basics - fuel, spark, timing.

My fuel gage has been goofy for quite a while, just make sure you're getting adequate fuel supply to the engine.

Yep, spark, fuel, compression. I was looking for magic! I just bought a Ford ETM off of eBay. It will help but I for sure will need to get my rig running before it arrives.

Thanks

Then check compression. IF you have spark and fuel the next thing is compression.

Ahhh now we are getting somewhere. Cheap part to throw at it and most common is the crankshaft position sensor.
Try changing that.

CKP, OK. I am going to assume it's screwed into the side of the block somewhere. I don't have an ETM so I'm in the dark. Do you think it would be possible to check the ACV at cranking speed off the sensor just as a possible way to confirm it's dead?

I found the CKP. It has a 2P connector with a green and a black wire in it. The harness runs around the front of the engine and past the distributor but since I don't see the wires at the distributor I will assume they go straight to the ECM. A scan tool would make life a little easier or I could take a shot at a CKP for $62.00 (That's what the dealer wants anyway).

I was just thinking, shouldn't the MIL come on and stay on if the CKP has failed? I believe it should even on an OBD I vehicle and this is OBD II. I might need to find a generic scan tool.

Autozone and AdvanceAutoParts will scan your truck for free and give you a print out of the codes.
