What engine do you have If you have the 4.9 K&N Part number 57-2503, for the 5.0 and 5.8 K&N Part number 57-2542.

CAI kits are a big improvement when the stock box can't pull enough air in. Not the case on our trucks. A K&N filter that replaces your stock filter will have similar air flow rates to the CAI and, in addition to being significantly cheaper, will actually do a better job at ensuring the air that goes into your engine is cold. Conical CAI kits usually hang out in the engine bay, where air can get hot quickly. Cone filters do look cool though...

You should look at some of the test done with the cleanable air filter and especially the so called cold air intakes. Most the test I have seen in magazines show that K&N filters let 50 to 75% more dirt based on size then the factory paper filter. New the K&N will flow about 125% of the same sized paper filter, after a couple of months there is no difference between the two. With the CAI the average temperature of air in the intake manifold typically increased by 80 to 100 degrees. So overall you are letting hot dirty air into your engine. I saw these in a older street performance magazine, a coworker brought them in when I was talking about a CAI on my truck. I was told that they do not perform that good and will increase the wear on the engine.
