Just the negative will do just fine I like to do this everytime I change out something that will affect the running condition. I can't adjust the clock in my stereo so there isn't a downside to doing it

Remove the negative battery terminal and short it out against the positive post on the battery, this will remove all energy from the keep alive memory capacitors within seconds if you don't feel like waiting a few minutes.
