clutch or trans?
i have a 89 4.9 4 speed with overdrive. i just got the thing i only payed $800 it has 150k on it but the engine runs strong, but i was driving down the road the other day and all the gas i gave it would make it go nowhere. it revs up but wont move in any gear including reverse. its a hydrolic cluth and a coupole days before it happened i started smelling a weird smell that i cant really explain ''almost like a chemical burn'' now i can put the truck in gear and i can still push it. is this normal. i asked around and someone said its possible to be the input shaft is busted is this possible? or is it more likely the clutch? now when i look under it the transmission has oil? or trans fluid caked all over it(not real thick but noticable from before)
sorry to start a new thread i searched around and cant find anything and it a new problem so i thought id try to hopefully have someone help me here does that sound like i need a new tranny? and basicly is there any way to tell without pulling the trans out?

You should have the m5od transmission. I've had 2 of those sale on me. When they failed they locked up. The second 1 at 70 miles per hour. The rear wheels locked up but the input shaft did not break.
The most obvious guess would be your clutch is shot. When you have transmission out draining it completely and refill it with ford type mircon automatic transmission fluid. You'll need slightly less than 1 gallon to completely fill it.

it has 4 speeds and an over drive im sure. its a inline 6 engine. yea it smelled kinda like burnd brakes i guess. im hoping its just the clutch because i can get someone to put that in and help them so i know how. i learned how to drive stick on the thing and i guess i was alittle rough on it since the clutch was already about 5 years old i hear the hydrolic clutches ajust themselves till theres nothing left and it just goes? but thank you all for replying so fast

sounds like clutch to me. Do yourself a HUGE favor and install a REAL clutch if you plan on keeping it. Research the vendor of the clutch and make sure it is MADE in the USA and not packaged in the usa(made in China!!!) replace the hydraulics while it is torn down and have the flywheel professionally machined to spec. Saving 100 bucks on a cheap setup will cost you dearly down the road...trust me! It's a lot of work to pull one by yourself in the driveway...
its still not fixed but i have some money now. can anyone recomend a site or a place online to get the clutch kit? a shop around me wants to charge 175 but ive seen them online for as low as 80 somthing dollars i dont have much money and i dont think i will have the truck that much longer.. should i just get the cheapest one?
