I have an 87 reg cab, im convinced now i have to replace the clock spring do i need a steering wheel puller to get the steering wheel off? thanks in advance for any response

 

You need a steering wheel puller to get any steering wheel off. They're not supposed to fall off, that would suck.

 

thanks sean i know there is got to be a large nut holding it on i just did not know if after i would need a puller

 

There should be two threaded holes in the wheel that the puller screws will thread into. Sometimes you can ****** the wheel off if you pull really hard, but it doesn't work too often.

 

Make sure you get the correct puller that lines up with the holes correctly, there are a few different kinds. There was no way in hell I was pulling off the wheel on my 95 without it.

 

What is a clock spring and what does it do?

As far as the steering wheel, I just put the nut on, take my knees push up on the steering wheel and tap the nut.

 

The clockspring lets an electrical circuit run down the steering shaft while rotating with the wheel without getting tangled up. Normally airbags, horns, cruise, and audio controls on the steering wheel require one.

 

Tapping on the shaft/nut is a good way to break the column.

 

Thanks I never had a problem with one, an the steering wheel, I said tap the shaft not hammer it, I got alot of wheels off this way w\o any damage, until I actually got a puller.

 

Great idea. Next time I remove a harmonic balancer I'll tap on the crankshaft.
