Default Cleaning up wheels

I had a question for you all about cleaning up some wheels. A friend of mine gave me some stock chrome wheels that had some minor rust on them. Now, I let them sit outside too long and more rust has accumulated but not bad. I was curious how (if) I can get the rust off of them and polish them up.

I'll post pictures in a a bit.

Thanks!

you could just polish the rust out but if its really pitted get some chrome in a can after you just sand it lightly. pictures would help. I have alloy wheels they are hard to keep all shiny.

I've never tried to take rust off of a wheel before but I had rust on a set of golf clubs shafts and used a SOS pad and soapy water and got alot of the rust off

They also make this rust remover liquid. I have some on order, but havn't gotten it yet.

I saw how it works on a car show. The mechanic just painted it on the rust and then let it sit for three hours. When he came back it was all shiny. I assume he had to wipe it all off and they just cut that scene. Then he just added some body filler, primer and painted.

I saw this on RUST OFF youtube and ordered a bottle. I have not used it yet, but by the video it should work. For $18 it is worth a try.

Sorry I haven't been able to get pictures up yet, I've been busy all day. However, I did hose them down and the exterior doesn't look that bad at all. I figure a wire wheel and a grinder will clean up most of the stuff.

I'll post pictures of my progress, probably slow now that Im not sick and my work week starts on Sat and my starter just went.

Your wheels are chrome plated...thats why they are rusting...some of the plating is coming off...just removing the rust will not solve your problem...like stated above , you will need to treat the rust and re-coat the surface to prevent it.

Thanks techrep, most of the rust is on the inside rim. It will be covered up when I get new tires on but I don't want rust there. I figure knock that off and prime it, paint it and it should be good for a while.

Will do. My grinder wont get into the inside rim so Im going to have to switch to dremel mode, and a lot of wire wheel attachments. Those things go quick.
