Default checking the starter

Ok, Im new here but I need a little help. I have a 93 5.0 cyl and i need help finding the starter. At times the truck wouldnt start well or at all, so I took it and tested the alt, bat, and the starter. Alt and battery were fine, but the starter would read 8 volts when I turned key to crank over. I was told it is probably a starter problem, so I need to know exactly where it is. I checked the fender and it wasnt there. Help please.

how did you test the starter if you don't know where it is? The starter is on he right side of the engine all the way at the bottom, its got a battery cable connected to it, speaking of which, i think you need to check both the ground and power wires.

I took it to a buddy who used to run a shop and he hooked it up to a voltmeter. The battery is new and the alt showed it was suppling power to the battery. When I started the truck, the volts dipped to 8 and sometimes it wont turn over when starting the truck. Other than testing the starter, what else could i check that may be causing this problem? I have cleaned the connections to the battery and they are on tight. I made sure myself.

You need to check both ends of the battery cables. The positive ends at the solenoid and the negative should end at the bellhousing using a starter bolt to attach it (mine does). My truck voltage drops like that too when I start it and it needs a new negative cable. I already did the positive.

Don't mean to dig up an old thread, but I don't want to start a new one as this pertains to a similar problem I'm having.

Cold start even after sitting a couple weeks is not a problem. Drive somewhere, park, shut off, and when I try to start it again, sometimes it won't even crank. It tries, the starter engages, solenoid hums (I think it's the solenoid, might be the starter). Even with a jump it will only barely turn over. Shucks tested the battery & starter, both good (battery had good amps and volts, starter engaded/disengaged fine and drew good amperage) solenoid is brand new. All connections are tight and clean of any corrosion (battery, solenoid & starter). Could it be my cables as you suggested, Sean? How can I test the cables specifically? Thanks,
