Default Cat. Converter

MY cat converter on my 95 is plugged, can I cut it off, weld in a piece of pipe in its place and good to go? What is the purpose of this thing? They are not required by law in my province. I refused to pay 500 and some bucks to have it replaced in my 86 sierra classic before I crashed it. The thing had more power without it but with the newer vehicles is there some computer stuff in them?

You can cut out the cat and replace it with pipe. A lot of people going this way cut and gut the cat so that it at least appears to be in place "just in case".

The benefit of the catalytic converter is that it scrubs some of the nastier environment damaging things from your exhaust before it's released to the atmosphere. I think the majority of people feel that karma smiles on the environmentally friendly wheelers. I think most people here don't judge either way, as long as your still rolling under your own power.

Your 95 should be OK, perhaps even see some HP gain, from the cat removal as long as you have a single O2 sensor setup...which I'm pretty sure you do have. If you have a second O2 sensor between the cat and the muffler, then this won't work out so well.

cut it off.....96 is when Ford went with the OBD II, so your 95 wont have any sensors after the cat, so you can get rid of it and not have to deal with a check engine light or anything....plus she'll sound better, and like bjafeman said....you'll notice a lil more power too.

Around here a cop can look under your vehicle and if the cat isn't there he can write you a ticket, even though we don't have emissions inspections. So I hollowed mine out and put it back on. Yes, '95 is OBDI and OBDI won't illuminate the check engine light if the cat is removed or hollow.

Someone previously stated 96 is obd2. Now mine is the early 96 still boxy kinda style before the body change-over. Does this 96=obd2 apply to me as well?

Your '96 should be OBDII, which means if you remove or hollow out the cat the check engine light will stay on unless you get one of those oxygen sensor simulators.

if you have the money look into Corsa, i think, Cat backs, high performance hi flow cats. really nice and give it a better sound depending on the muffler you use.
