Best 4.9L Shift Point
96 F150 w/ 4.9L inline, 4X4, M5OD, 3.55 or 3.08 gearing I'm not 100% sure, stock tires if it matters. I am shifting around 2,000 RPMS now. This is my first Ford, and my first standard. Although I'm not bouncing off the rev limiter, I'm not sure if I'm shifting at the right time. When I bought the truck, the last owner said, "your gonna learn on this? , if you can drive this, you can drive any standard." So am I shifting it at the right time or am I being too nice to it, and pissing everyone else off behind me?
Thanks
Thanks

I think your shift points are a matter of choice. For my best mpg I shift right around 1800. When I want to romp on it, I have red lined it on many occasions! If I'm towing, it's a matter of feel as to where I need to be to prevent bogging down by shifting at too low of an rpm. Many variables exist as well as the condition of you trans and motor. My 4.9 has 191k miles with the m5od and 2.73 gear and shifting between 1500-1800 is my best for everyday driving. I think your good at a 2k shift point. I quit racing every car I pull up next to a long time ago. That's why I love my 300...I can tow them now when they blow their junk up! Lol

300's are low end torque, low-rpm engines with a very short power band. Id have to say 1800 to 2000 is right for normal driving. Now if you were racing, and I dunno why you'd wanna race with a 300 I-6, you'd wanna rev it to 3500 or so. Maybe not even that high, like I said these things perform at low RPM's. You wanna race, get a 302. They can and will rev high and still perform.

I shift at 2000RPM all the time now and get around 15-16MPG in town and roughly 21MPG on the highway at 110KM/h at 2150RPM.
I never knew what my shift points were before I installed my tach, but I would shift at 10KM/h, 25km/h, 35km/h then at 90km/h to get into OD. Those were all roughly around the 1500RPM range.
I just passed 193,000KM on the 300 and don't have stock tires, slightly larger tires with the 31's and 3.55 gearing.

My auto tranny 3.08 geared on 31x10.50s likes to run in the 1800-2100rpm range. Sometimes I'll wind out first to 2500, and getting on the interstate I'll run till 2600 (in 3rd) before getting 55mph and drop into OD.
16-17mpg combined, 20mpg at 65mpg, and I can't comment on city since I don't ever drive it through a tank in there

Yeah... lol what's the big deal? Going from stock to 31s, you could just clean your truck and feel about the same change in power. It's unnoticeably slower. Just can't top 60 mph pulling 3,000 pounds lol but I really doubt being on stock tires would change that much.
Either way it's got 4.10s and 33s in the future :woohoo:
