back pressure
hey guys,
i have a 90 f150 4x4 5.0. i'm putting an exhaust on it. i've got the cat back taken care of but my cats are both rusted out. i was looking into either the basani or advance also has a Y pipe. mechanic said the smog pump from the catalytic converter that comes with the Y pipe wouldn't have enough back pressure. anyone have any experience with the Y pipes? i've got a glass pack on it now. you can tell it's on there but it's still pretty quiet with both rusted out cats on there. thanks a lot all.

I hear this all the time, back pressure isnt something to worry about. I had a 94 with a 302 and it had headers and straight pipes on it not cats, no mufflers. It was way loud but I never had any problems with it. It was one of the freeest running 302s ive ever had. The only thing with replacing cats with an off road pipe without cats is emissions inspection make sure you can get it inspected and go from there. Dont worry about back pressure ever again lol.
Yea everyone says without cats there isn't enough back pressure but thats a myth. If you have one bend in a pipe thats all you need. I drove my 90 mustang around for a while with nothing but the exhaust manifold on it while I was in the process of getting my exhaust done. It was annoyingly loud but the manifold was enough backpressure by itself. My f150 only has a glasspack on each pipe where the cats use to be and then the exhaust dumps about 8 inches after that on each side. It runs better than it did and I have no problems after 2 years with this setup.
thanks for the info. i wish i could get away without the cats but the inspection is too much to get around here. i'm worried about where the smog pump on the cat goes back up to the vacuum on the engine.
