Default Automatic Transmission Question

I have a question about the E4OD transmission. Can the tail shaft be unbolted from a 2WD transmission then have a 4wd tail shaft be installed
plus the transfer case making a 2wd transmission into a 4wd ? Will this work or not? I have a 1990 F-150 and I am having trouble locating a 4wd transmission. It looks like the tail shaft will unbolt but I could be wrong.
Can anyone help me?

Thanks,

Mike

The tailshaft housing will unbolt, but the whole transmission will have to be disassembled to change the tailshaft itself. Having someone do this would cost more than a rebuild, and it is very difficult to do it yourself if you don't have experience. Several special tools are required.
