Default automatic transmission help!!!

so i have a 1994 f150 302 with a automatic transmission my problem is something to do with the linkage

im in neutral for drive and park for reverse but putting the shifter all the way towards park i’m always in reverse (park not engaging) for me to start i have to count to neutral to start and to drive i have to count to drive

just wondering where i have to look to fix this

Sounds like the linkage is out of adjustment if the gear shift doesn't appear to be in its normal position. The locking bolt may have loosened or the bushings have worn out in the linkage. You will have to crawl underneath to check it out at the transmission.

I have had the indicator needle get messed up before, indicating the wrong position. It never bothered me as I never looked at it anyway and memorized the drive position.

yeah my main problem is that i no longer have park when i go all the way up it still think i’m in reverse so i just use my parking break and put it in “park” so i can get my key out

Sure does sound like damaged or misadjusted linkage.

i don’t think it’s snapped because it still lets me put it to all other gears it just seems like they all shifted over so i’m just wondering how would i readjust it or am i screwed and going to have to replace the shifter cable in total

If it’s not your linkage or your cable check your MLPS. It’s what your linkage connects to. It could either need adjustment or the sensor might be out. Take a voltmeter to the sensor itself, check for resistance.

could it really be the neutral safety? because when i have it in “park” with engine on it acts like reverse so when i let go of the breaks i go backwards
