Default Any suggestions?

Howdy all, I am new on here and need some suggestions to help with my 94. Just bought it 2 weeks ago and have worked on it more than I've driven it. Had a couple Rangers before this and just decided it was time to graduate to a bigger truck. It has the 302 5.0L 4x4 Manual tranny.

First issue is I believe the in-tank fuel pump is bad. Ran fine for a couple of days until I decided to drive it to work and then it started stubling and sputtering like it was out of gas and then it died and wouldn't run for about 15min. Then it ran fine. Only seems to have the problem when it gets below half a tank.(only has single tank). Pump runs really loud and runs continuously while engine is running (is that normal?). Changed the fuel filter (those hairpin clips are a bitch!!) And that didn't solve it. Pressure tests were all good, but did them with a full tank of gas. I got the bed lifted off now and getting ready to pull the pump but was wondering if there is anything else I should look for before buying parts?

Second is an oil leak. At first glance it looks like the oil pan gasket, but I read a few threads on here that suggest it may be the lower intake manifold gasket. Is there any way to tell which it is without pulling the motor? Or should I just pull it anyway?

If the pump is noisy it's probably on its way out. When the fuel level gets low the pump isn't cooled by the gas adding to the problem. You don't have to pull the motor to change the oil pan gasket, but it's probably easier. If the motor is oily top to bottom then the oil is coming from higher up than just the oil pan. Degrease the engine and watch where the oil is coming from.

sounds like the pumps out to me, but you might want to replace the fuel pressure regulator with it if its continuously running. unbolt the trans mounts and pull that end of the engine trans combo down and you should be able to get a hand up there to feel for a leak. you could unbolt the trans for the engine and really get a good look, and check your clutch while you're there

*edit* OnDemand says to remove the throttle body and intake man to remove the oil pan so which ever way you choose man

Thanks for the reply. That was my thinking on the fuel pump just wanted a second opinion before I spent the $$.

I think after the headache with the fuel pump I might wait till next week to tackle the oil leak. Not looking forward to pulling the motor but seem like it's the best way to go.

A little off topic - Anyone now where to get a fan shroud. I check Autozone and tried the junk yard and had no luck. Is that a dealer only part? Figure I might as well replace my cracked one while I got it all apart.

At least I got a really good deal when I bought the truck cause it's been a bit of a headache so far.

The pump is supposed to run continuously while the truck is running.

Was going to pull the pump tonight, but we got a nasty T-storm building right now and I don't have it in a garage. So looks like it will have to wait.

Just went out and tried reaching up above the tranny to check for oil. got my hand all the way up there and it was dry. Then right before I climbed out from under the truck I notice the a piece of the oil pan gasket is actually sticking completely out from between the pan and the block. Looks like I found the leak.

My guess is the last guy that had it probably didn't want to pull the motor so they just tightened the bolts to try and stop the leak and smashed the gasket right out of the side. Just another reason not to take short cuts.
