Default Advanced timing on I-6...worth it?

Before I go and bump up the timing a few degrees, just thought I'd check and see if anyone had already done it, and did it help at all power or fuel economy wise? Any trouble with the truck pinging under load?

The truck is a '90 f-150. I'm only planning on 2-3 degree advance. Just looking for a little extra power/fuel mileage.

Thanks!

Will

I have read lot about it here. Im thinking do it too. are you running
16 BTD . have anybody have any overheatting problem by advancing 6 degres more than it suppose to be. i not suere if my engine take 16 BTD it has over 370 K miles , but i try it. see if i can get to 17 mpg. im getting about 16 now. i dont worry about hp. 93 302 V8

the 300-6 will take alot more timing than the v8s will....

you will NOT experience over heating issues advancing the timing... only retarding the timing causes overheating issues...

I detoxed the engine first. Seafoamed combustion chambers & in oil to de-sludge. Flushed coolant system & went 40% antifreeze/ 60% distilled water. At 16 BTDC there is a slight Temp increase, but doing whats mentioned above pretty much covers it. I recommend switching to Motorcraft Nic plated Copper cores also. They'll run cooler than Double Platinums & are engineered to fail before a ping or overlean condition, you may not be fully aware of, puts a hole in a piston. I also dropped 1 temp range (180F) on my thermostat when the time came to replace it, but the timing bump didn't require it. It does prefer it though! NOTE:The amount of extra advance you engine tolerates w/o ping, many times is directly related to the amount of deposits in the combustion chamber surfaces. More deposits/ less advance capable. An unmetered & even metered air intake source can inhibit extra advance too. Advanceing a MAP sensor engine that has a CAI Mod (whatever you want to call it) is not advisable, as you're already overlean. You can try if you want, 2 degrees at a time. but listen carefully for ping. When ping becomes apparent, reduce advance by 2 degrees! That rule goes for everybody!!!

I have the 4.9. I did it, but I pull a trailer every day so it's hard to tell if it made a difference.
