I know this is an old post but i found it while searching for tach info. I called my ford dealer today asked about adding a new cluster that has a tach since mine has none (2003 Ford F-150 STX) ford says if i install myself the truck will not start after the install cause it has to be programmed (jusk yard told me the same) ford says if the truck did not come with a tach then there will not be a tach wire in dash and it will be very hard to add one. the cluster sells on ebay for under 50 bucks and ford quoted me 256.00 for install not including adding the wire for tach. also dealers can not set the mileage to match old cluster.

ok so i went and bought a small tack for 30 bucks and i like the old school racing look. My question is where do you connect the green wire?

You connect the green wire to the coil.

A tach is thee single most easiest electronic I've ever installed. I'd way rather put one of those in than rip my dash out and splice another dash in. It's fourwires and it's exactly the same as wiring up fog lights except you have one extra wire going to the coil. Little scotch lock and elec. tape and your done.

Depending on the year there is no cut and splice, just remove the old cluster and put in the new.

I don't know how you would hook up an aftermarket tach on a 2003 since it has multiple coils. Maybe ask in the proper section.
