AC and gurgling problem!
Hi All
Having a couple of issues with my '94 F150, 2WD, 5.0, standard cab, 79,000 miles.
I'm hearing a like a liquid gurgling noise in the cab from around the passenger glove box when starting to drive my truck, not so much when its going but if i slow down and then accelerate i hear it again, any ideas ?
I'm also having a slight chemical (Freon?) smell through the vents when the AC is on, the AC is working as normal and freezing cold. (not sure if this problem could be linked with the above problem too ?)
Thanks for any info
p.s. There's no wetness on the floor or any leaks that i can see .

That is where the heater core is. Check your coolant levels? The heater core is always on unless "AC max" is turned on if i remember correctly. It uses this for blending. Is the smell coolant? If it was anything freon related you could check by hooking up a gauge to your low pressure side and checking. If your coolant gets low, the AC gets ineffective really really quickly in my experience. So it probably isn't that.

Topped the coolant up yesterday, took about a quart thats all. Went for a spin in the truck and its still smelling.
I put the AC onto AC MAX and the smell goes away, i guess its something to do with the heater core?

The gurgling is air in the system - it ends up in the heater core because that is one of the highest points in the system. Park her on a steep uphill grade and let her run for a few minutes.
The MAX/AC re-circulates the air in the cab so your A/C is only cooling down already cooled air - if the smell goes away when you do that it means it is coming from outside the cab. I wouldn't worry about the smell - I get the same thing on my truck when I turn my A/C on and it still cools like crazy after being recharged 6-7 years ago.

The smell is hot coolant evaporating off the leaking heater core. It's probably leaking due to corrosion from missed coolant changes. Fortunately, it's easier to change the heater core on these trucks than to change a headlight. Unfortunately, I've heard that replacement heater cores don't fit right. So you might end up looking for a good one in the local JYs.
