AC Compressor Smoke???
95 F150 5.0L Flareside. Last summer, at the end of summer, I noticed smoke coming from my hood. Lifted hood and saw that the AC compressor was smoking and was extremely hot. Turned off the AC, and let everything cool down, and smoking stopped.
I haven't turned on my AC since, so today I turned it on, but it didn't work. The system has zero pressure, so I charged it with Freon with oil added, as I have heard that sometimes AC compressors smoke when they run out of oil.
Got the pressure into normal range, but the AC clutch never activated, and still have no AC.
Am I right in assuming that the compressor is probably toast? Or at least the clutch? The clutch spins easily by hand in either direction while the truck is running. Does that indicate anything?
So I guess my final question is, how hard is it to replace the AC compressor? Obviously the system would need to be evacuated, but after that, what all would I need to do? I guess I would need the special AC disconnect tools. Any more advice?
