can anybody tell me how to retrieve the codes on my 96 f-150? apparently it's right at the cutoff. i took it to the " shop" and they said it must be an obd 1 model. my check engine light is coming on and then it goes off after a day or two. ext. cab. 5.8 l. 4wd. i did a search, but i'm on dial-up and i suck at these forums. sorry if i'm posting in the wrong place. thanks for any help.

Your truck should be OB11. You have to use a code reader on OB11. Take it to an Autozone or Advanced auto and they will check it for free.

The shop you went to must be morons. '96 is supposed to be OBDII, but even if it is OBDI they should have been able to identify that it was and retrieve the codes. Go to a different shop or read the codes yourself using the link above. If the diagnostic terminals are under the hood it's OBDI, if they're under the drivers side dash it's OBDII.

well, i said shop, but it was really advance auto. there's no reader port in the cab. they said it " must be under the hood ". plus it was like 10 below zero and i thought i'd mess with it later. they thought maybe it was made early in the year so it was still obd1. who knows. i'll go to the link above and do it myself. thanks a ton for the help.

The diagnostic terminal is located underneath the center of the console if its OBII.
