95 Auto Tranny with reverse problem
So I bought a used 95 F150 a few weeks ago (1, 2, D, OD tranny). The transmission was acting up a little bit after I got it. I would shift to reverse, hear the engine rpm change to take the gear, but when I hit the gas, it was like I had my foot on the brake. Messing around with it for a couple minutes would typically get it into reverse and off I would go.
I decided to change the fluid and filter so I dropped the pan. Fluid was original and black. There was some metal shavings in the pan, the filter obviously needed to be changed and there was also 3, 1 1/2" "pins" in the bottom of the pan. I have no idea what those are from from as I have never been in a transmission before.
I pushed the new filter up into place and installed the new pan. Refilled the fluid and it appears to be at a good level while in park and warm.
Took it for a test drive and everything was working great. No problems going into reverse or any other gear.
About 200 miles later, I can't get it back into reverse. Same problems. I was reading online and some said that the filter might be clogged (new filter so no) or maybe the filter fell out of the tranny and it could be causing the problem.
Does that sound right? Should I drop the pan again and see if the filter is still in place or just drive forward and look for a new tranny???

Well, reverse is gone now and park and neutral allow the truck to roll forward but not backward.
Looking for options here. i *think* the tranny is a E4OD but I can't find a plate to id it. I have 1, 2, and OD on the shifter. It is a 2WD.
I have found a tranny from a 1990 bronco. Listing says it have "push button overdrive". Is this the same tranny as i have?
Any advice would be fantastic. Not sure what to do with this truck now.

Check the number of bolts on the transmission pan, this and the shape will help determine the transmission. There were 2 electric auto overdrives used on these truck the e40d and the AODE or 70R4 transmission. These are not really interchangeable without changing the wiring harness and transmission computers.
What's the transmission code on the door sticker? If it's an E (and the transmission hasn't been swapped for something else - and it does sound like it with the 20 bolt pan), it's probably an E4OD
I had an intermittent hard shifting problem from 1st to 2d. Local transmission shop insisted only a major overhaul would fix it and that the transmission would fall out if I tried to drive it home. Well, I drove it home and then some.
(Hope the moderator doesn't get his knickers in a wad if I recommend other web sites). Between this site, the Fordf150.net, fullsizebroncho.com, fordfuelinjection.com and one or two others, I learned a lot about the E4OD. The two F150 sites have a lot of good troubleshooting info, the bronco site has a sticky on troubleshooting the E4OD and the FordFuelInjection site has a great deal of information on trouble codes.
I did spend $30 on an ODB reader for my trouble codes. You can pull the codes using the Check Engine light if you'd rather not spend the $30. I did spend quite some time on these sites reading, then going out to the truck and checking things.
You DO need to know how to pull the ODB codes. They'll tell you what's wrong.
My final code said the MPLS (manual position lever sensor - in other words, the sensor at the transmission that tells your system what the shift lever selected) was out of adjustment. Five minutes yesterday morning under the truck and the MPLS was readjusted and the problem solved.
I saved $3000 by not having an unnecessary overhaul done and learned quite a bit about F150s in the process.
Thanks to the moderators of these 4 web sites my truck is running better and my checking account isn't empty.

Not to hijack the thread but I also have a 95 and it shifts real hard into any gear with the CE light on and the OD light flashing. Greyfox could you explain or show me where you found how to adjust this sensor? Thanks a lot.
Are you throwing a 634 code? Do you know for sure it's an MPLS? If not, please go to fordfuelinjection.com. Scroll down to the How To Run A SelfTest entry and find out what codes you're throwing.
Start with the KeyOnEngineOff (KOEO) test. You have to resolve all codes there before you try a KeyOnEngineRunning (KOER) test.
Unhook the battery for a minute before you start. That'll dump all codes. Hook the battery back up, start up, bring the engine up to operating temperature. If you don't drive around, cycle the gearshift thru all gears before doing the KOEO.
My problem actually was the shift linkage was slightly off. After all this, I only had to adjust the shifter cable very slightly. You should make sure this is correct before you adjust the MPLS. After doing this, I have no more hard shift problems.
To help with the transmision, go to www.fullsizebroncos.com. Under Technical Writeups there's a E4OD trouble shooting entry. When you finish with that, you'll know more about that transmission than 95% of the mechanics who work on transmissions!
