Default 93 5.0l

I am new to this site I just got tasked with trying to fix my mothers 93 F-150 4X4 the truck is in mint condition and I don’t believe it has every been put in 4 wheel drive that I know of, she has taken it to several shops to fix a rough idle and surging and it will shut off at a stop light but will start right back up, I am a novice mechanic and do not have any diagnostic tools, I have been told it could be a weak fuel pump or something in the distributor, I just replaced the dead battery and it started on the first turn but was idling very rough and sputtering when I gave it some gas, would like to know what you think before I start throwing parts at it.
thanks

Take it to a local autozone or advance auto because they will hook a diagnostic scanner up to it for free. I say clean or replace the IAC and check for vacuum leaks. There's numerous threads involving those two, so search around for them.

All you need is a paperclip, or you can use one of your moms bobby pins.
