Default 911 Help Please...

Guys, I know this is my first post, but I'm in a bit of a bind. I am helping friend of mine move from Kentucky to Texas, and he has a 1994 F-150 that will not start. It has been having an intermittent starting issue, where it will start one day, then not the next, and has gradually been getting to be longer intervals between days where it will start. He has been in Texas for about 8 months, and is just now able to get his belongings, and his dad has been going to his house and starting the truck and letting it run every couple days to keep the battery charged, but it has been hit and miss. It will crank over fine, but will not even attempt to start or even get a hit.

I depressed the bleed valve on the injector fuel rail, and he cycled the key, and gas shot out, the fuel pump runs for a couple seconds the shuts off once pressure builds up, so I do not believe that is the issue.

I got some starting fluid, but still would not even attempt to start, or fire.

So we went to the local parts store, and got a cheap code reader, and these are the codes we pulled. It seemed to give them in 2 groups:

116, 121, 636, 10

122, 124, 125, 212

We are hoping to get it going so we can drive it back, but if not, I will have to haul it down next chance I can. Just trying to prevent tossing parts at it, and just hoping something works. Any help is appreciated, we will be leaving in the morning, so trying to get something worked out on it ASAP. Thanks, in advance.

I cant tell if its even turning over when it wont start so if it isn't make sure your getting power to the starter when it wont crank.

Sorry guys, I put this in the wrong forum, maybe a mod can move it.

I don't have much experience with gas engines, mainly diesel.

It cranks over, but will not start.

It sounds a lot like the PIP sensor in the distributor. I had that problem myself. It is a very random problem that gets worse with time. Eventually it starts cutting out while you are driving. I changed the whole distributor. A new one is around $100 at O'Reilly's.

But before you do that, I would check the ICM. They go bad quite often also.

Also a mechanic had changed my distributor with a used one and that went bad eventually too.

Sounds like a no spark problem if starting fluid doesn't change anything. Here are some troubleshooting steps to test ignition components.

May want to put another post up on that forums link see if you get better response...

Other then that, I would check for Spark...Ground a plug to the block with the plug wire still on it and see if it's getting spark. Have some one try and crank it...

If the plug is not sparking when grounded out while cranking check to see if the coil is getting Fire to it....Make sure all the wires are plugged in...

Check your fuses.

Other then that I'd rather not say because I'm not an expert... I would just get a 12-24 volt test light at Walmart for 5 bucks and start poking it around.

Good luck

I recently had a no start issue with my 96 5.0. Turned out to be the engine temp sensor was faulty. Sensor was telling the computer that the truck was hot and wouldn't let it start. Just fyi. Good luck. I hope you figure it out.

Thanks for that, I will check that out. I had what I think is the ICM checked, (little aluminum part on the drivers side fender) at O'Riellys and it checked out good.

I pulled one of e plug wires off the distributor cap, stuck a key in it, and hel it close to the terminal, and no spark jumped. I would have pulled ta plug, but because we had stuff packed I didn't have tools available.

Ruled out fuses, because of the problem being random, I just assumed that if a fuse it would be either on or off. I could be wrong.

I replaced the coil as well just on a guess, and that it wasn't very expensive. No change. Both wires that run into the bottom were hot with the key on and while cranking. Is that correct?

We just decided to leave it here, an when I come through headed to Indiana, I'll pick it up and take it back down to Texas to our shop where hopefully I can get it sorted out with some of y'all's info.

Need to check to see if your getting fire to the distributor...

The Arrow with 1 <----- I forgot the name of this. I think it may be a capacitor that holds a charge once it is charged up. It may have nothing to do with it. Never had one go bad. All I know is it will shock you even after the motor is turned off once it's charged up.

The Arrow with 2 <----- if that wire is not plugged in or getting a good connection the vehicle will just turn over and over and over with out cranking.

I believe it is a capacitor, but I did not check it.

On the wire, it was getting fire to it when probed from the backside connector.
