Default 87 Transfer Case Shift/Linkage Issue

I bought a used BW 1356 Transfer case after mine started grinding - but the shifter and linkage don't line up! The salvage yard claims there is only one model specified, and that's what they gave me. They went out to check the vehicle to see if something had been left (which I didn't think would matter since I was just swapping) and he sent me a picture of the shifter - which is clearly different than mine. I have read that the 1356 was changed in later model years - would this be something the salvage yard should have known about? Or is my mechanic doing something wrong? I'm not the mechanic! Thanks!

Hi Chris -
Sorry for the vagueness. I don't know what the BW was pulled out of, I will have to check back with the salvage co. on Monday. It was to go into my 87 F150 - 4x4. Manual shift.
It fits mechanically (drive shafts) but the linkage does not match up.

87 C6 with 1354 transfer case

Don't know if this will be any help - this is a 1354 behind a c6 from my 87 F250

Thanks again Chris,

It appears that the used transfer case came from an 89 F150 - which, according to my repair manual, is a different variation on the same model number transfer case.(13-56)
Now I just need to find out if that means incompatible, or if there is a mechanical solution.

I think I know your problem. The early model BW1356 shifters on automatic trucks came up through the trans tunnel hump. Later models went off to the side of the trans tunnel on both auto and manual trucks. I put an 87 transfer case in my truck when I swapped my truck to 4wd and the shifter comes up through the removable pan for the trans hump.

Any tag numbers on the case? I might be able to help you figure out what year it is.

So, it appears I have an answer, but no solution as of yet. The 1356 out of my 87 has linkage similar to that of the 1354 in Chris's picture. Notice the horizontal link to the transfer case and that it appears to have removable bolts where it attach's to the case itself.
The replacement 1356 from the salvage yard has the same part, only it is more vertical, and is not externally removable, or it least it cannot be loosened or repositioned. The linkage to the "not quite right" transfer case allows for a back and forth shifting motion, whereas my original, and Chris's 1345 allow for more of an up and down motion.
Answer: incompatible. Solution: Salvage yard rep "baffled" but trying to find the right T- case.
If anyone has seen this, or can shed some light on it (my mechanic is quite certain only the right type will work) then I'm all ears!

EDIT: Actually I misspoke. It is the small link that is vertical on Chris's picture and on my 1356, the newer 1356 is more horizontal.

Maybe you need the tailshaft housing and linkage/shifter from the junkyard donor. After that it should fit. 87 & 89 share the same frame and the same cab. Like 65mechanic said, you may have to adjust the hole in the floor, but if you've got the t/case, the linkage and possibly the tailshaft housing if you need it to make the new linkage work, it should be simple. For Sure lot's of other people must have done that swap before.
