Default 5.8 potential

Hi y'all im trying to decide if its worth doin a swap my plans are to run a cam and long ube headers port and polish a set of gt40 heeads for it. itll be running on mass air. What should I expect for power and also is it goin to be worth swapping the 5.8 or just do all that to the 5.0?

A 5.8 will always have more power than a 5.0, but it just depends on what you are doing with your truck after the build.

Is your 5.8 a windsor or Cleveland? Car Craft just did a 351w build that made almost 600hp.

http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/...p-351-windsor/

Not that long ago—in Car Craft's Jan. 2015 issue, in fact—we documented the build of a pretty potent 351W build that ended up making 505 hp with the stock crankshaft and connecting rods, a set of KB flat-top hypereutectic pistons, a mild Crane hydraulic roller cam, and a pair of Trick Flow Specialties' 190 CNC 11R cylinder heads. Because the engine seemed perfectly happy running up to 7,000 rpm, we suspected that there was more in this combination that could be utilized with a bigger, more aggressive cam. Trick Flow confirmed our suspicions, telling us they routinely run test their valvetrain parts at engine speeds above 7,000 rpm. Well, that's all the incentive we needed. Building on the foundation of our previous build, meet Dirty Harry, the 357ci Windsor that pummeled our eardrums with its 7,500-rpm redline and a whopping 595 hp.

That engine is not a viable candidate for a truck engine. You're talking 7,000+ RPM and a 12:1 compression ratio. That would (likely) mean premium fuel and no low end torque.

Not a good combination for a truck.

There is no replacement for displacement!

I'm not saying build that exact engine, but showing what is possible with a cam and some heads.

I had an older bronco (an 88) which was fine for power but swapped in a 351 in it's place. It went like a bat out of hell with the 351.
I understand that the 351 has a lot more meat down in the bottom end too, which is the 302's weak point.
Pretty sure you can get more out of a 351 without doing as much.

Knock the compression down a few points and it should run on pump premium, 12:1 is a race gas motor.

Low end torque is over rated, lol.
Not something I would haul wood, or tow with, but it would make a great Saturday night special.

To clarify im trying to decide what engine with the mods I specified what engine would be better for my bronco ... I use it for daily driver / plow truck / trail truck once in a while. Also im about to add 33s and 4.10s.

Does anybody bave an idea of what kind of power those mods would make on a 5.8?
