5.0 to 4.9?
New to the forum but not new to fords. My question is I have a donor 1994 4.9 in a wrecked truck. Been looking for a shell to transplant the engine with no luck what-so-ever. I have found a 1996 5.0 with a blown engine. I know the trannys will bolt up. Will the transfer work. So what would be involved in transplant. Thanks in advance for replies.

Yes, that's right. It won't pass inspection because you can't legally make an OBDII truck OBDI, but if you didn't have to worry about inspections you could still do the swap. You can use an older engine and still pass inspection, as long as the engine management system stays the same.

Technically, the way the law is worded you can't use an engine older than the vehicle you put it in. But in reality, since the engines are identical other than the bolt on computer controlled devices you can use it and it will run the same as it was intended for that year. It's the same reason you can't use a carburetor on a fuel injected vehicle, because you have downgraded its emissions technology.
