Default 4 wheel drive problems

Just purchased a 96 F150 4.9L 5 Spd. I used the 4x4 today and when I put truck in 2H 4x4 light was still on and eventually got it to turn off at that point front driveshaft was loose but when put in reverse the truck would buck and stall as if not enough RPMs or still in 4H. Also felt as if front tires where trying to engage and hubs are free. Now the truck needs a new slave cyl. Could this just be the slave or is the transfer case not disengaging completley?

The truck shouldn't stall even if it really was in 4H. I think that's a separate issue... probably your slave cylinder not releasing the clutch all the way if you say it's bad.

Do you have auto hubs or manual?

How many miles on it? The transfer case not disengaging sounds like you have a damaged shift fork, which is a common problem on the 1356 transfer cases when they get up there in miles. The oil pump retainer wears a groove in the case, which allows it to rotate with the shaft. It spins around and breaks one of the shift forks... can't remember which one at the moment but I think it's the "mode" fork (selects 2/4wd) that gets trashed.

You can crack the case open and take a look, even if that ain't your problem you can do the fix/mod to prevent it from happening later on.

Here's some reading if you're interested in tearing the case down:
