Hi,

I have a 93 4.9 5 speed and more often than not I get a crunch when changing up from 2nd to 3rd but all other gear changes are smooth and even going down from 3rd to 2nd is smooth ! Any ideas (other than its the driver) ?

try rubbing some vaseline on your clutch cable right where it connects to your slave cylinder. spread it even and lightly or it wont conduct as well.

 

Sounds like the 3rd gear syncronizer may be bad. Downshifting from 3rd to 2nd uses the 2nd syncronizer. It could also be excessive play in the clutch pedal. With the engine running hold the clutch pedal 1/2 inch off the floor and shift from 1st to reverse back and forth several times quickly. If it grinds you have excessive clutch pedal play.

4th to 3rd is fine also.
