Default 351 rebuild

gonna pick up a 351 sometime this week hopefully.. I'm a beginner at this stuff with very little experience so i will need advice along the way.. 1st.. where to start? what should i do 1st? I'm gonna get a running one, and just throw cash into it, whenever i get the cash, to put out as many HP as i can afford, gonna build it up till my 302 goes out so i've got plenty of time i hope. just need pointers, what to do for horsepower, and could i get a manual or something like that for this kind of thing? thanks.

tear it down....

have the block Hot tanked and checked for cracks...if it passes have it bored with Torque-plates (if it needs bored), new cam bearings and core plugs....

now you've got a solid foundation for a good build. If you want to spend some time hot footing it or working it hard at upper RPMs then have the main caps pinned...make sure they use BBC style cylinder head dowls on the main bolts for pinning...these are teh strongest way...

Buy a piston, rod and crank kit like the Eagle kit....it come with Pistons, Rings, Rods and bearings and a crank... Either in stock configuration or up to 427cu in in size... (I'd go for the 406 kit) its as cheap if not cheaper to buy this kit than to purchase new pistons and recon your rod and grind the crank and buy all new rings and bearings. I love these kits and they make life easy....

For heads I'd buy the Trick Flow Fast as Cast Track Heat 170 heads...you'll have a very nice very torquey engine... down right mean with the right cam

any machine shop can hot tank and degrease the block...

as for cam that depends on what FI system you have and how much tuning you want to do?

The Sequential with a MAF sensor for the easiest route....

The Speed Density with a MAP can work but you'll need a tuner and a laptop and a bunch of free time (Google search QuarterHorse Tuner)
