Default 2wd almost stuck in grass?!

OK so i was coming home from school yesterday and a bus broke down right in the middle of the street, so we decided to go off the road on the shoulder and it had been raining all day. I went off and my tires started spinning, bad. I almost got stuck but managed to spin the tires till i got on the road...what will help this? I know weight in the bed will, but thats gonna KILL gas mileage, will all terrain tires like 30s or 31s be good? I have the ext cab lariat 4.9 2wd. its higher in rear too than in the front. Any help? Thanks

Wet grass/mud can get as slick as ice. With only 1/3 of the weight over the back tires, traction is not very good.

Some knobby tires will help - keeping the back tank full will help - strapping two lengths of rail road rails between the rear tank and bumper will help as well.

My grandfather had a solid steel bumper made for a 1970 F100 narrow bed he used to use on the farm. The guy who made the bumper said it weighted between 350 and 400 lbs. My grandfather said he didn't get stuck in the pasture after that point. Of course those old bias ply mud gripes would fill up the rear fenders and add another couple hundred lbs. as well...

well i want to get tires that will do better off rpad, but will also drive ok on road. I kinda dont want to add weight since its gonna make my gas mileage worse since i only get 13 anyways.

how often do you actually go offroad?
bigger, heavier tires will probably hurt your mileage more than some weight in the back

Sounds like going a little lighter on the skinny pedal may have helped in this situation.

Yep, that's a 2wd truck for ya. The best thing you can do is put a locker in the rear.

You shouldn't need 4wd to get through grass.
