1996 Manual to Auto swap
Here's the situation have to have another knee surgery and won't be able to push the clutch in for months. Honestly have trouble now after driving for a few hours. So I have to either swap out my manual for an automatic or sell the truck and get another with an auto.
I know the 1996 is OBDII and the 1993 isn't so here's my questions
Thanks in advance
- I currently have 1996 5.0L 4x4 F150. (M50D-R2)
- I have a line on a non-plateable 1993 5.8L 4x4 with an automatic for around $500. Can't see it until at least tomorrow.
- I also have a 1996 5.0L 2wd parts truck sitting in my yard. Looking up the transmission code (U) it appears to be a 4R70w
I know the 1996 is OBDII and the 1993 isn't so here's my questions
- Will the ECM out of the 1996 2wd work to control the tranny out of the 1993? I'm guessing it will be a E4OD as the 4R70W was 2wd drive only.
- Are the ECM's 4x4 aware? Like do I basically have to find a 1996 4x4 auto to strip? Or is that even a factor
Thanks in advance

I think the ECM will work. If it doesn't wouldn't be that hard to figure out what one is needed and find one. They are for sure engine specific and trans specific. The 96 is somewhat rarer but lots parts still available. Just hope the electrical plugs to the trans and tcase haven't changed, that could be a real nightmare.

Make sure you take the transmission wiring harness off the donor truck. And everything considered life will be simpler if you can find the right year truck with the right driveline to harvest parts. Anything is possible, but some things are so much simpler when they already fit properly.
'93 to '96 was such a big transition stage for Ford, changing engine management from speed density to MAF, bank fire to single fire injectors, partial electronic to full electronic transmissions etc.
Like I said, anything is possible, but '96 to '96 is going to bolt right up and plug right in, so whereas finding a '96 5.0 4x4 auto will be more difficult, swapping the parts will be much, much simpler (and less expensive).
Unless you're real good at that kind of thing - that would probably be a major factor
