Default 1994 F150 4R70W selector lever adjustment

I am about to adjust the selector lever on my 1994 F150 with a 4R70W automatic transmission (installed by PO). The dash needle is misaligned pointing between the letters on the dash. I found good instructions from the site but am curious as to why I need to hang a 3 lb. weight on the selector lever once placed in the "D" location? What purpose does the weight serve as I need to align the needle indicator to point correctly.

TIA Lobo

It's not off much. Does turning the little selector wheel right under your steering column not fix it?
