Question 10btdc

I realized today that the timing for out trucks is 10* BEFORE top dead center.

What way is this when looking at it?

I have marked 10* on the crank pulley. It is to the right of the 0* when facing it from the front of the truck. Is that plus or minus?

So the pulley spins clock wise, should my timing mark come before or after TDC?

Right now it comes before TDC, so is that plus or minus?

Please forgive my ignorance, I have never timed an engine before, and have never been trained to do so.

Same thing here. Unless somebody else jumps in, your best bet would probably be to get the timing procedure out of a shop manual like Chiltons, Haynes, or Bishko.

Was watching some youtube videos on engine timing earlier. Some of it's too much information when you're just looking for the basics.

There is one thing ... the engine computer plays with the timing when the motor is running.

That ten degrees before top dead center is the base timing. What it does is give the computer a refrence point to start adjusting from.

You have to disable the PIP circuit and get the computer out of the mix before setting the base timing. After you're done you re-enable it.

All the more reason for the manual. It will tell you where to look on the wiring harness to disable / re-enable the circuit..

Yes I believe I am doing it right. I watched a video of some MSD gurus doing it. Since the crank goes clockwise, the mark I made is before 0, thus before top dead center. I did pull off the SPOUT connector to time as well.

well rule of thumb is when you increase timing before TDC the idle will increase and after TDC idle will decrease... though in Fuel Injection its going to correct itself rather fast

On our trucks, looking at pointer from front of truck on P-side of motor should line 8 up to 15 depending on how your truck reacts. More timing will give you some low end, but kill gas miles.

But to time it, with light hooked up on #1 wire, pull spout on driver side apron next to TFI module, loosen distributor bolt so it can be rotated. Rotate distributor toward P-side, while watching marks with light. Line up 10 or what ever you want it set at, tighten DIST, and re-install spout.. Take for ride and make sure there's no detonation, if there is, drop timing til it stops on test ride. Another downfall to raising timing above stock, whill have to run higher octane gas.

Just for my sanity, it goes:

-20 -10 0 +10 +20 +30 (Timing marks on crank)
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Rotation of crank)

I have my line drawn on the +10, and I it set so that line is right on the reference point. So that is right correct? That is before TDC since it is going clockwise?

Great thanks everyone! It it timed correctly now. I just need to figure out why it rides so rough.
