Exclamation 2011 F-150 5.0 Loud Engine Knock Tapping When Cold

Hi All,

Now that the cold weather is upon us in NJ I have noticed that my 2011 F-150 5.0 has a bad engine knock when I first start it in the morning. It lasts about 3-5 minutes until the engine warms up and the it goes away.

My truck has 21,000 miles. It is serviced by the local Ford dealer. I change the oil based on the interval meter. I have done no modifications to the truck.

This doesn't sound like engine ping/knock when I use regular gas. It sounds like my older cars did when they where low on oil. Sounds like metal on metal or piston slap.

I shot a couple of videos, one on the morning of 12-16-12 and one on the morning of 12-21-12. It sounds like a diesel until it's to operating temperature!

I am going to take it to the dealer, but wanted to get some feedback before I do so.

Thanks,
Andrew

Another guy on here awhile ago had the same noise and turned out to be the ac pulley and belt. They had a tab for that on the 2011's 5.0.

I agree with ecoboostkev in that it doesn't sound like a pulley and to get it to your dealer. It almost sounds like injectors to me but that's just an assumption listening to you video. Typically a lower end part failing won't make noise only when its cold, not saying it isn't possible. If you have a solid piece of pipe laying around the house start it cold and hold it against the block or possibly the pan and if you feel the vibration it most likely is internal. Hope this helps

That's definitely not injector noise. You can hear the typical injector tick really well at the end of the video. Piston slap maybe? But it sure sounds more pronounced then just slight piston slap on a cold start. My old '03 5.4 2V truck had some piston slap when cold, but no where near as loud as that. I'd be pretty concerned about that noise. Best of luck man and let us know what the dealer says.

Subed to hear what dealer says. Mine makes a cold start noise but nothing like that. Mine is more of a rhythmic tap like tap, tap, tap tap, tap, tap, tap repeat. Its only when its cold start and only last for a min or two. I also just changed the oil right before I noticed so i am hoping the place put a different weight than I asked for and thats causing it. It almost sounds like its coming out the passenger side head.

Yeah, this is not the clicking of the injectors. It was even louder this morning because it was colder outside.

I have a few other problems with the truck (phone and sync buttons on the steering wheel work when they want and the there is a driveline clunk when I shift into reverse) and will make an appointment with Fette Ford in Clifton, NJ.

I highly doubt it's a pulley or belt.

I hope it doesn't become a prolonged tennis match, as it often is with warranty work. When repairs are out of warranty and we pay full rate, man do we get results quickly! lol

It's going to the dealer Monday, I will let post the results. I shot another video on 1/3/13.

Still doing the same, it's consistant.
