Hey guys,

I know this is the wrong section (kinda). I do have a 1997. I am looking for this part number for under $200.00 preferably. Tasca parts has it but I never heard back from them when I inquired about it. I'm hoping vendors see this. I cannot post in the for sale/wanted section and I need this part ASAP. Sorry for posting this in the wrong section but again I need the part as soon as possible.

Thanks guys!

It's the GEM module that is very prone to getting wet from a leaking windshield. I'm sure you know it's located behind the fuse panel in the cabin and just unplugs and unbolts from it's little spot. If you go to a local pick-n-pull (you go out into the yard and pull the part) and not a junkyard that pulls the parts themselves, you could walk out with one for under $30. At least I did when I needed one for my old Explorer.

RockAuto.com has various ECUs and GEMs for $120 to $165 depending on which one you need.

Try calling Tasca instead of waiting for an e-mail response. They could be swamped with other customers asking about parts.

Rob, you say you have a 97 Ford, yet the # you give is for a 98 according to the counterman @ my local Ford parts. Was this changed out prior and updated? Did this number come off the module? Just wondering,

Hey guys.

Thanks for the quick response. Yeah I have a 97 but that's the part number the Guy at the Ford dealer gave me. Did you guys get a different part number for a 97? I have not pulled my gem yet but I gave the Guy my year, make and model. I also told him I have electronic shift on the fly 4wd and the 5.4

That's what I thought. It's an updated part number that's why it comes up as a 98 number. The number you have is for a 98 with those options, so the 97 is now using the updated 98 part. You might find the correct GEM in an Expedition or Navigator since you have all the options for that year basically. You should do well in a wrecking yard where you get to pull your own parts. Even if you didn't find an exact # match, since more than one has updated to a single new part number, if the truck or SUV had the options you have, that module would most likely work without problems. Any that have less options, probably won't. That help?

All of these posts helped me guys thanks.

One last question. The updated part number should work with my truck though right? Or do I NEED to pull one from a 97. The reason I ask is cause there are no junkyards around me.

I know the GEM is a vehicle specific part but can it be taken from one vehicle and put in another without programming problems? According to my dealer here, it can not.

Hey Lenn,

The Ford dealer I got the part number for my truck from said there would be no programming required as long as the GEM is the same year (unless as previously noted my part number is now for a 98) and the truck had the same equipment. For example my truck is a 97/4WD/5.4 with electronic shift on the fly 4wd. My GEM part number would be different that someone with a 97/4WD/4.6 with electronic shift on the fly 4wd

Hmmm... I might see if I can find one as a spare. Drawback is I have a 2002 Supercrew 4x4 with the 4.6L. The better percentage of Supercrews were a 5.4L.
