Replacing OEM Backup Camera Only
Hey guys,
Any recommendations on what camera to buy for replacing the oem camera in the tailgate emblem? I have an oem emblem camera with a camera that needs replacing. I'm not sure if just any Amazon 1/4" camera will work with good quality or if I should get a specific one. Anyone here replace just the camera on their truck? The camera will be used with a new head unit so it would need the rca connections.

If you have the factory camera, you can configure it thru the buttons on the steering wheel. Turn guidelines on/off, zoom, etc.
An aftermarket camera will not have that capability. However you should be able to splice into the existing video wiring so the image still shows up in the mirror.
When I added my Kenwood, I spliced one of its camera inputs into the factory wiring. Now I get the video on the head unit and the mirror.

The mirror is just way to small to be practical.

slimcubby - Camerasource has replacement cameras for the OEM. It comes with its own emblem. It will NOT allow control like the OEM but it is supposed to be a better camera.
rnlcomp - There is a thread on it but I tapped the harness where it runs behind the parking brake and just connected the KW input to the truck wiring. You can see the coax transition near the connector. C-210 9,10 on my 2011
It works really well. I also bought a front camera.

For anyone just wanting reassurance. My 2010 SCREW backup camera (screen in the mirror version) had started going intermittently between blue screen and working and then eventually would be blue for a few seconds when I put the truck in reverse before turning black and then no image at all, just normal mirror. I bought the camera from the local ford dealer BL3Z-19G490-B ($320) as well as the name plate CL3Z-9942528-AA ($27). I popped off the old name plate which of course breaks both tabs, no way to avoid that - it's designed that way. I removed the 2 screws holding the base to the tailgate, unclipped the cable from the camera, then removed the 3 torx head screws that hold the camera to the sub-base. I replaced the old camera with new, reinstalled the 3 torx screws to hold the camera to the base, attached the cable to the new camera, reattached the base assembly to the tailgate with the 2 screws and then tested the camera. Everything was perfect, no setup required. I drove it for a bit just to make sure that the camera kept working then attached the new name plate. Total repair time (not including driving) was 15 minutes.
