I had the locking gas cap on my 2009. On the 09-14 generation, there was a single cover that opened when inserting the nozzle, with the locking mechanism and it was positioned a little way down the filler tube, so the locking cap could fit above it.
It appears on my 2016 that there are two actual covers that open when inserting the nozzle, a black dust cover right at the top of the filler tube and the normal, locking mechanism that requires the exact nozzle size to open.

Each requires the exact size nozzle be inserted before the cap opens (or the included funnel), but the black dust cap on the outside of the 2016 can be pushed open without that exact size nozzle.
Hope they make a locking one for it. It's really needed in some environments. I have found a hose jammed down mine already when it was parked at work.
Look at the bright side You got free hose thief got nothing. Put a lock on it thief will just poke a hole in your tank, take what he can and let the rest run on the ground.

Mechanism schematic for the 09 one:
I'm not concerned at all about anyone tampering or otherwise with my fuel filler.
However, thanks for sharing the cut-away views of the mechanism. I have not seen this before and was curious about it.
How secure do some of you think these locking fuel doors are? A 79 cent screwdriver is all you'd need to get it off. Only thing it will do is cause more damage. And if you've made someone mad enough to worry about them pouring sand down your gas tank, you've got bigger problems to address.
