Help with carburetor (probably)
Hi all, new guy here.
I got an 84 Bronco that previous owner put a 351 Cleveland into.
Some years ago I was promoted at work to a position that afforded my personal use of a company vehicle, and it became my daily driver. Poor little Bronco ended up sitting for a few years, needing a head job that took my forever to get around to.
Well I did that a year ago (it was my second head job ever), and I just can't get the thing to run right. I'm pretty sure its the carburetor (Motorcraft 2150). Could also be the timing, but I can't get it to run well enough to even check the timing.
I just finished a VERY thorough cleaning of the carb, replacing all the gaskets and valves, ensuring all the circuits are unclogged and then hours on youtube trying to figure out how to set the choke and fast idle cam and whatnot. I put it on and it immediately ran like a champ. It idled up to operating temperature with no problems. I tried to adjust the idle screws, but it seemed they were already in the best position. So I took it for a drive.
The drive went great. I did fast acceleratrion, slow acceleration, stop and go, let it sit then sped off real quick ...all the stuff that would cause it to bog or flood before, and everything was perfect. After about 30 minutes of this, I drove back home for the final test- shut it off, start it again and see if its still running good. But no. It shut off fine, but would barely start again. I had to turn it over for so long I thought the battery would die, with my foot on the floor to get it to barely start, and then I had to keep giving it quite a lot of gas just to keep it going. As soon as I let off, it would die. I tried turning up the idle with the throttle-stop screw, but I ran out of screw and it still wasn't high enough to keep going. Also it was now making a rattling noise, from where I can't tell. But I could barely get it driven another 30 feet into my shop, I had to keep one foot on the accelerator to keep it running and the other on the break because I had the throttle pushed like halfway in and it really wanted to go.
I'm at a total loss. I have no idea what coiuld cause it to run perfect, then shut off, then barely run at all after restarting 30 seconds later.
Poop.
Any suggestions?
