Default Help with '93 F150 Shift Cable Install

I had to replace my shift cable on my truck and I know basically how's it done, but is there a trick to install the gear shifter end. I am having a difficult time getting the the connector back into the square bracket and lock in. I have dropped the steering column as well to see if that would help by giving me more room to work but I am really having issues getting it in the mounting bracket square slot. Is there a trick to it or something I am missing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
