Default '89 starter not engaging, 5L

New, rebuilt starter from O'Reilly Auto Parts. Old starter was fried and did not work. New starter worked fine initially. Started fine a dozen times over two days, Then suddenly, turn the key, starter spins but does not engage the engine. Either the bendix is not being thrust out to engage the ring gear on the flywheel or I've got bad teeth on the ring gear. Any suggestions about how to proceed? Replacing the starter again is one option. Alternatively, Is it possible / practical to turn the engine to a different spot on the ring gear. How can I turn the engine a few degrees to get to a new spot on the flywheel? Thanks in advance.

Change it out...O'reily's can test it and replace if necessary. I had to go through a few before it finally stuck. I think I actually changed to Auto Zone.....
