Can you remove just the glass from the mirror assembly?

 

Yes, I've done this successfully, but it will probably break the glass. Take a door panel remover tool and squeeze it in. Put the "toes" of the tool as close to the center of the glass as you can get them, which isn't that close, and pry out. Work your way around as it comes loose.
