Default 1996 5.0 ECM failure? Need help with testing/finding a rebuilder.

For as long as I’ve had the truck it’s had the infamous airbag flashing 5 times, 3 second pause, flash again. Bouncing idle when in park, delayed acceleration, and bad mpg (8 city 12 hwy). The other day i was driving around 45 mph and the engine started misfiring bad. Still ran, just rough and the check engine light was flashing very fast with the engine rpm.

All that to say, is my ecm bad? Looks wise the capacitors look great. Do you have any recommendations for what to look at/ check or people to send my ECM to?

I would have started with a code scan before pulling it. I think you are just guessing that the ECM is bad which is the most reliable part on your vehicle. As long as you have it out, I would replace those capacitors and retest. Capacitors can go bad with no visible signs of failure.

I tried pulling codes before i took it out but the fuel pump was staying on when the key is turned and my obd reader was giving an error

Now the truth comes out. Don't know why you left out this detail. Faulty capacitors will cause issues with the fuel pump(s) staying on.

Change them out yourself. Go with the same capacity and temperature rating (105 C ) but up the voltage rating to 25v.-35v for added durability.

The capacitors I ordered were the same ones that are in it currently. They are 3.3uF 63v. Should I get 100v capacitors or are these okay?

If you already ordered them, use them. Having been in the electronic industry for decades, I like to go slighty higher in voltage rating for added durability as long as the physical size is the same.

I didnt know that you could up the voltage like that. I did some digging and found some capacitors. Let me know if you think i can use them.

on the board:
3.3uF 63v
47uf 10v

What I found:
3.3uF 100v 105c
47uF 16v 105c

However, the ones I found are about 75% the diameter of the ones on the board. Would that make a difference?

There really isn't a need for 100v caps to replace ones rated at 6.3v. That's right, 6.3v not 63v. Those which you list will work fine.Myself, I would use use 35v rated and be done with it. Those should be the same size as the originals and fit well in the space on the board.Just make sure you observe the polarity (+ and _ ) and install the new ones the same as the originals.

I replaced both capacitors. Put it back in the truck and it runs 20% better but still rough. OBD reader still is showing error and wont read anything. Fuel pump also still staying on. Any more ideas?

I have a 1996 also, been trying to find who tests and repairs PCM's /EEC's with no luck.
