To remove and replace the rear speakers out of my 96 xlt extended cab do I jus pop the little metal shrowd off? Or do gotta take off the whole piece of plastic trim?

If its the same as a regular cab, which I'm pretty positive it is, just take those 4 screws out, the screen and speaker will come out then you take the 4 out of the speaker. It's pretty straight forward.
