OK, so the open circuit idea didn't work. Tried the variations, and got it fixed. Taped two together, green and blue got it working. Shifts like a champ. Go figure.

Are you sure about wire color? MY 96 F150 XLT all 3 wires are striped no blue or green. May be different because of year model???
Do not. have to replace shift lever assembly if OD switch is faulty. Remove end cap bezel from shift lever and you can flip OD switch out with small screwdriver or ice pick. Switch and bezel are available at most local parts store for about $10-15 bucks. Do need to check wiring where it exits shift lever at steering column.
