Default Parts Interchange between generations

Had my 1992 F150 XLT Lariat repainted a few months back and the shop was supposed to remediate a significant amount of surface rust on the roof. Long story short, they simply smeared Bondo over it and it's now to the point that I need to replace the roof assembly (oddly, the shop is now closed permanently). I've searched around quite a bit for a used roof assembly and I've even used a nationwide search engine on car-part.com, which searches salvage yards nationwide. The returns on available roof assemblies includes roof assemblies scavenged from 1987 F150s to 1993 F150s. If I'm reading the search engine correctly they are implying that a 1987 F150 donor roof assembly will fit a 1992 F150, under the heading "Interchange Choices".

Does this sound reasonable and is there any way that I can verify that I can use a 1987 F150 roof assembly to replace a 1992 F150 roof assembly other than cutting them both off and giving it a shot?

No experience but sounds reasonable.

There were minor sheet metal changes between Gen8 (87-91) and Gen9 (92-96), unsure whether extended to the upper cab area.

Without further input from other users here, suggest pulling up archived pics of both generations and then look closely around those pics for the areas you're looking to replace.

Initial thought is that there shouldn't be an issue - these two generations are SO close, but so much easier to research around for visual verification than to actually cut-n-try.

Good body shops are hard to find
POR 15 and Bondo is how you fix a rusted roof
Just get a roof from an IDENTICAL , and same year truck
Don't mess with anything that MIGHT work

Plan on putting in a roll cage if you have to cut the pillars at all. Their strength comes from multiple folded metal sheets and once you cut through them, there is no way to weld the inner walls you cut. Especially the wind-shield pillars.

Suggest the Gen 8 ('87-'91) should be a direct fit regardless of configuration. Wouldn't overlook the immediate previous Gen7 ('82-'86) and post Gen9 ('92-'96) generations although some first-hand look-see and measurements would be in order.
