Update on the tank removal: I cleaned the junk around the rear tank pump unit. There was some pitting all the way thru around the pump area. So, I decided to order a new rear and front tank to be done with it. Not bad, just hand full of bolts to cut. I am leaning towards getting new rotorcraft pumps and reusing the sending units...prices vary from place to place, but I would rather have the MC at this point. Already ordered new vapor vents and grommets and that anti-squeak rubber for the rear tank......tanks should be here Wed. More to follow.... BTW. the tank straps are reusable except for bolts, but still in decent shape.....

Ordered the MC fuel pumps; re-using my sending units; should all be here by Thursday; prepping the metal, scraping, cleaning, spraying to preserve; hopefully get fuel to the engine by Friday

While the tanks are out, I highly recommend pressure-washing the frame a few times (with & without soap/surfactant/degreaser), letting it dry, and undercoating it.

Try NOT to get it on the leaf springs; especially between the leaves.

Yeah, that is part of the planning process. There is a fair amount of surface rust on the frame that I can scrape right now before I get to that part....the bed has LINEX sealer since 2001 and is in great shape......

Haha.... I triple checked my mid mount fuel tank and got 19 gals so I ordered the 19gal tank and new fuel pump. When the tank got here I said WTF....I needed the 17gal fuel tank. 19 gal is long and slender and butts up against the transfer case. My current tank is 17gal and short and stubby and sits about 2 ft from the transfer case. I did another check with the maint manual and then saw the little asterisk that said if I had the EO4D tranny then I use the 17 gal tank otherwise I would have used the 19 gal. Damn....the 17gal fuel pump was about $70 more. So, this should be a lesson for someone else. After doing some checking I found someone who actually put the longer tank it but it was real close to his transfer case but he did not care. BUT, I do, so I ordered the right tank and fuel pump and sent back the wrong items.. I guess I should have measured the existing tank and checked it against the specs...

That would be why reg cab short box 4x4's don't come with front tanks.

So, after cleaning the frame around the rear tank and prepping it last nite, I went ahead and installed the rear tank this morning. I went to connect the pump electronics up to the truck wiring and the connectors were totally different. I snipped the connector off the new pump and snipped the connector off the old pump and wired them together and primed the tank and started it up. So, now the rear tank is good to go.

I then prepped the front tank. Disconnected the batt; released the fuel pressure in the rail and the fuel spurted up and then the pressure was relieved. I started thinking about when I did that for the rear tank, I did not get any fuel spurt at all. I thought that was interesting and now I think the rear pump may have been bad. But I certainly did not released any pressure when I did it for the rear tank.

Well, today I should get the new midship tank and fuel pump. Should be easy since I know what to expect. Honestly I would rather do this stuff with the bed removed. So much easier if anybody wants to know if they have not done it. There are some who drop the tank and get it done quicker but in my case I would have beat myself up and cut my hands and broke my fingers trying to get thru the rusted bolts. As it was I had to grind the bed bolts to get them off and then hack saw about 4 other bolts underneath. So this worked for me. I already ordered the bed bolts about two weeks ago because they were backorder for several sites.

After taking off the midship tank and barely touching the pump, it almost fell off. The lock ring was rusted thru and was barely holding down the fuel pump. The fuel pump gasket o-ring was pressed down, but the fuel pump itself was just sitting on it. The rear fuel pump had to be pried off as it was pressed down on to the gasket and was a tight seal. So, I can see where the fuel leak was coming from when the rear tank was overflowing into the side tank....

Okay the midship/front tank is up and running. I flip between the rear and front and it seems to work. Sputtered and died once. Observation: The rear pump in-tank filter laid on the bottom of the tank. It rubbed against the bottom for 25 years and it wore a hole in the filter. So, any crap in the tank went into the pump. Also you can see the rub mark in the bottom of the tank. Next step is too replace the inline frame fuel filter to start fresh with all new stuff. Not sure if it makes sense to replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator as well????l...nothing indicates that I should, but it is the original 25 year old part. I see it is a bitch to change out......

If it's working, leave it alone until the maintenance schedule says to change it (and the FPR isn't on the schedule). Original parts are typically MUCH-better than replacements.

I used to think there were 2 fuel tank connectors, but I recently learned there are 3.
