Default Strange noise

My 96 5.8 has been making a weird whine noise at certain speeds under tourqe in o/d, pushing the petal down as far as I can normally around 55 mph it makes a noise that I can best describe as tiny gears spinning extremely fast. What I do know is I have a loose heat shield, but doesn't seem to in any way be able to reproduce the sound. My front fuel pump as gotten a bit louder, but doesn't seem too abnormal considering my back one has too in the cold, just not as bad. And my dads car pump whines a little. I also have a little clunk under my truck over bumps, the severity of the sound seems to depend on the day not related to weather. I'm just saying this in case it is somehow related to each other. I'm kinda suspecting that noise is from my front drive shaft though, not sure. But back to the noise I started the thread about. It gets louder for about 2 seconds, then just stops, and like I said normally around 55. Truck runs fine and all seems fine, but I'm wondering what the noise is. It does seem to get worse the colder it is, but doesn't always do it and not always at 55. Any input would be appreciated. Truck is a 96 ext cab 4x4 5.8 and almost everything is original. Only thing replaced not part of normal mantainance is the front auto hubs with Manuel hubs, which just broke on me, the water pump, and some u joints and the front windshield. All else is original. Just saying so if there is something that can make the noise that normally goes by now, it can be told. Truck has 158,000 miles.

wheel bearings or a bad bearing on 1 of your pulleys. my 250 has a whine when i first start it up, not very loud but you can hear it, but that's what my issue is.

id also say maybe your transmission but usually you have other issues, plus iv never heard of that issue in these trucks.

I thought about it being my tranny, but I figured other problems would be there like you said. It does shift early sometimes though, normally within 20 mins of first driving. It also sometimes does a weird shift into o/d that almost sounds like a double shift. But I think it's unrelated. What I do know is I have a bad pulley, it's Chirping especially when cold. Didn't know it could make that weird noise too. I'll look into it.

So I found my passenger front wheel has play in it in all ways, so I guess the bearing needs repacked and tightened or replaced. Conveniently the manual hub on that side won't engage, so I assume the only fix is to replace. The bad, I've never dealt with a 4wd system short of taking off the transfer case and front drive shaft, and can only find a video on how to take the hub off, but does it only go back on one way, or does it need adjustments and gears lined up correctly? And can I buy just one hub, or do they only come in pairs. Is there a write up on this? Maybe covered in a bearing replacement, cause the hub has to go back in then.

i just repacked the bearings in my 250 2 days ago lol. remove the manual hub, 3-5 screws, easy. the cover comes off and there is a large C-clip that i just use a flat tip to get out. then the rest of the hub slides out. there is another C-clip and then the spindle nut which you need a special socket for, like $10 at the parts store. line everything up the way it came out so you know how it goes back in. just replace all the bearings and races, inspect the manual hub but it may need replaced.

from here on out im not exactly sure the torque specs for a 150 but it says in your manual, or someone else can chime in.

So I replaced my hubs, and repacked my bearings, still hear that noise, I'll try my pulley next. And when I replaced my hub, the passenger side one was a little tight as far as wiggle room, I think because I forgot to pull out a spacer in it. It has some play in it, but very little. Is this ok? Looks lie we might get some snow here soon, and in Alabama we don't get salt on the roads, so a few inches requires 4x4 if they don't close the roads. So is it ok to run until I can fix it this weekend. It has some play but not much, maybe a 16th of an inch play.

So what is the pulley called that would be at the smog pump in older trucks? That's my bad pulley.

With the cover of, there is supposed to be some play in and out when you put the screws in, at least the directions for them said that. One side had play, and I took a spacer out of it. The other has very little play, and I forgot to take out the spacer. I can push it in and out of its housing.
