Default Is this a starter solenoid???

My 1991 302 will sometime not start.
as in when this happens I will hear a decent sounding buzzing sound when turning the ignition key but not cranking. Every great once in a while it will happen randomly but it seems to be the absolute worst after almost every gass fill up. I can alway ger ut yo statt by just constant turning the ignition off and on until it does crank and when it cranks it fires right up.
any ideas??

my opinion no, the only time the solenoid is 'energized' is when you turn the key to start,

if it is worse after filling up, that probably is fuel/EVAP related

Ahhh icic. Would a bad solenoid control valve cause this? The one in the truck is shorted and causes a small constant vacumm at even idle but not enough to cause a surging idle.

Idk how but when I checked it it had no resistance and then tried to add 9 volts to it and the actuator( I think that's what is in the solenoid) would not click or change the amount of air when not hooked up.

You have a bad starter drive, often called the bendix. I would fix it as soon as possible before you grind off the flywheel teeth and have a major repair on your hands. I always just replace the drive inside the starter instead of replacing the whole starter if the starter otherwise works good.

Most people aren't comfortable replacing the drive so then replace the starter ASAP for the reason mentioned above.
